The analysis used a three-year, 60,000-mile view across five fleet segments. It separated manufacturer-scheduled service from expected wear items such as tires, brakes, wiper blades, and bulbs. Repairs and warranty work were treated separately and were not included in the maintenance figures.
The Gaps Add Up at Fleet Scale
The projected spread between the lowest- and highest-cost examples reached $3,646 among selected premium and luxury SUVs. Automotive Fleet also reported gaps of $3,499 among passenger cars, $2,842 among cargo vans, $2,672 among compact SUVs, and $1,686 among selected half-ton pickups.
Those per-unit differences can look manageable in isolation. Across a 100-vehicle order, however, even a $1,686 maintenance spread becomes a six-figure lifecycle issue. The composition of the cost matters too: one model may have lower scheduled-service costs but higher expected wear-item spend, while another may require more frequent service visits that add downtime pressure.
Why Maintenance Belongs in Spec Reviews
The timing is not accidental. Automotive Fleet cited federal inflation data showing vehicle maintenance and repair costs increased 41% from 2020 to 2025, while technician supply remains tight. For fleets replacing pickups, vans, SUVs, or passenger vehicles in the next model year, the practical takeaway is to compare maintenance projections alongside acquisition price, fuel, residual value, and uptime expectations.
