Diesel Spike Reopens RNG Truck Payback Math

Energy Vision's updated analysis, reported by Heavy Duty Trucking, says some Class 8 fleets could recover the higher purchase price of an RNG tractor in 1.3 to 2.8 years under current fuel-price gaps.

Diesel Spike Reopens RNG Truck Payback Math

Fuel Spread Changes the Math

An updated Energy Vision analysis, reported by Heavy Duty Trucking, says the recent diesel spike has improved the near-term business case for renewable natural gas trucks in some high-mileage operations.

The report update followed on-highway diesel reaching $6.285 per gallon nationally on Sept. 14, with California at $8.039. Energy Vision compared renewable diesel, battery-electric trucks, and natural gas trucks fueled with RNG as options for replacing older Class 7 and 8 diesel equipment.

Payback Depends on Utilization

The key number is the fuel-price gap. Energy Vision estimated that compressed natural gas cost about $2 less per diesel gallon equivalent nationally and about $3.50 less in California in early September.

A new Class 8 natural-gas tractor equipped with an engine such as the Cummins X15N costs an estimated $75,000 more than a comparable diesel tractor. For a truck running 100,000 miles a year at 6 miles per diesel gallon equivalent, the modeled payback is 1.3 years with a $3.50 fuel advantage and 2.3 years with a $2 advantage. At 80,000 miles a year, the range is 1.6 to 2.8 years.

Fleet Planning Takeaway

The numbers are useful, but they are not a full total-cost-of-ownership answer. The analysis does not settle financing, maintenance, private fueling infrastructure, driver routing, residual value, or whether a fleet can actually source enough equipment.

For fleets with high-mileage routes, return-to-base fueling, or reliable CNG access, the point is worth testing in the next replacement model. For irregular routes or mixed geography, the better move is to run the sensitivity analysis first and treat fuel access as the gating item.
