Fleets Rank Productivity as Top Priority Amid Diesel Spike From Middle East Conflict
New survey puts productivity first for U.S. truck fleets as fuel costs surge. JKC Trucking warns the dual hit of weak freight rates and rising diesel is squeezing carriers hard.

Productivity Tops the Priority List for U.S. Fleets
A new industry survey has identified productivity as the number-one focus for U.S. truck fleets in 2026, with carriers under mounting pressure from rising operational costs and a freight market that hasn't recovered. The findings arrive alongside reports that fleet equipment purchasing intent remains strong -- a signal that companies are investing in newer assets to offset efficiency losses from aging trucks.
Mike Kucharski, vice president of refrigerated carrier JKC Trucking, warned that diesel price spikes tied to ongoing Middle East instability are creating immediate margin compression for carriers already contending with weak spot rates. "The combination of low revenue and rising fuel is forcing hard choices," Kucharski said, noting that fuel procurement strategy has become a top-of-mind issue for fleet managers across all segments.
New Platform Integrations Target Maintenance and Uptime
Fleet technology providers are rolling out new tools aimed directly at the productivity gap. Fleetio and Motive announced a joint maintenance and optimization platform that integrates work order management with real-time vehicle health data. PeopleNet launched a Mobile Fleet Manager app giving dispatchers and fleet managers iPad access to live fleet data, mapping, and messaging.
International Truck debuted its Intelligent Fleet Care system, which uses onboard diagnostics to flag maintenance issues before they cause breakdowns. Industry panelists at recent conferences emphasized that the shift from reactive to predictive maintenance -- enabled by telematics -- is one of the highest-ROI moves fleets can make right now.
TMC Meeting to Focus on Maintenance Fundamentals
The Technology & Maintenance Council has scheduled its fall meeting with a dedicated focus on fleet maintenance fundamentals, signaling that even as technology advances, basic operational execution remains a challenge for many organizations. Maintenance managers report that balancing preventive maintenance schedules with uptime demands is still one of their most persistent pain points.
Telematics-enabled diagnostic systems are gaining ground as fleets look to catch problems before they result in roadside failures. But adoption is uneven -- smaller fleets in particular face cost and complexity barriers when integrating new diagnostic platforms with existing workflows.
PHH Explores Fleet Business Sale; USA Truck Returns to U.S. Ownership
In deal activity, PHH is reportedly in discussions to sell its fleet business, a move that could reshape the commercial fleet leasing landscape. Separately, a leadership group completed the acquisition of USA Truck from Danish logistics company DSV, returning the carrier to domestic ownership.
Commercial Carrier Corp. marked its 50th anniversary this year. On the alternative fuel front, Postal Fleet Services leased 20 CNG trucks from Ryder, continuing a gradual diversification away from diesel among fleet operators looking for fuel cost stability. NAFA also launched a new Corporate Fleet Advisory Council to address emerging industry challenges.
