Vehicle repair costs rose 60% from January 2019 to August 2026, nearly twice inflation, as software access, diagnostics, and ADAS calibration add cost to routine work.

Repair Inflation Outruns CPI

Vehicle repair costs have climbed far faster than the broader cost of living, putting another pressure point into fleet maintenance budgets. A Carscoops report, cited by Fleet Management Weekly, says repair costs rose 60% from January 2019 to August 2026, while inflation over the same period was 32%.

The data point matters because the increase is not limited to major crash work or specialty vehicles. More routine repairs now involve electronics, software access, and brand-specific diagnostic workflows, which can push labor time and shop overhead into jobs that used to be simpler.

Software Is Part of the Repair Bill

Carscoops pointed to the growing need for laptops, subscriptions, and manufacturer-specific software in modern repair work. Some tools are dedicated to particular brands, while access to diagnostic or reset functions can be sold as a subscription measured in hours, days, or years.

For smaller independent shops, that creates a cost stack that is hard to absorb. The result is often passed through to customers, including fleets that depend on outside maintenance providers for overflow work, specialty jobs, windshield replacement, ADAS calibration, and repairs away from home markets.

ADAS Changes The Cost Structure

The article also highlighted advanced driver-assistance systems as a major cost driver. A windshield replacement can now involve camera calibration, target boards, liability exposure, and additional diagnostic steps. Carscoops cited AAA research that found collision repair costs had risen 37.6% in a 2023 study.

For fleets, the practical move is to stop treating repair inflation as only a vendor-price issue. Maintenance leaders may need to compare vehicle specs, calibration requirements, glass and sensor repair procedures, parts rules, and shop-network capability before the vehicle is already in service.
