FMCSA Pauses Motus Update Enforcement
FMCSA has suspended biennial-update enforcement for USDOT registrants with due dates on or after June 1 while it stabilizes Motus. The same rollout has drawn fake portal emails, making direct URL checks part of the compliance workflow.

FMCSA has temporarily suspended biennial-update enforcement for registrants whose updates were due on or after June 1, 2026, while the agency stabilizes Motus, its new USDOT registration system.
The pause means USDOT numbers should not be inactivated solely because a required update could not be completed during the rollout. FMCSA has not announced an end date, and Heavy Duty Trucking reported that additional guidance is expected as recovery work continues.
Fraud Risk Came With the Rollout
The transition also created an opening for phishing. FMCSA says bad actors are impersonating Motus with emails that push users toward a supposed New MOTUS Portal. The agency says the legitimate address is motus.dot.gov, and it has identified four fake domains tied to the scheme.
FreightWaves reported that the emails claim an off-cycle update is required and direct recipients to non-government domains. FMCSA says users should avoid suspicious links, report scams, and use the FMCSA Contact Center for registration questions.
Fleet Compliance Takeaway
For fleets with USDOT records, the enforcement pause is not a reason to stop tracking registration work. Keep the normal due date on the compliance calendar, route Motus updates through known account owners, and save screenshots or ticket numbers if a filing is blocked by system issues.
The practical control is simple: bookmark the official Motus URL, train dispatch and back-office teams to ignore urgent email links, and verify any request for an access code before entering credentials. Registration data is now part of the fleet's security surface, not just a paperwork task.
