Merchants Fleet says electric vehicles in its portfolio covered more than 290 million miles in 2025, giving commercial and public-sector fleets another operating data point as they revisit electrification plans.
The company's latest electrification report, covered by Automotive Fleet, frames the market less as an all-at-once conversion and more as a route-by-route deployment question. Merchants said those EV miles helped avoid more than 117.5 million kilograms of CO2, while customers continue to weigh charging access, route length, vehicle availability, and total cost of ownership.
Demand Gets More Selective
The report lands at a moment when federal support and used-EV residual values are less predictable than they were during the first wave of fleet electrification planning. Merchants said demand for sustainability strategy remains active, noting that 58% of recent RFPs still include ESG-related questions.
For fleet operators, that means the conversation is shifting from broad mandates to places where electric vehicles already fit the work: predictable routes, depot charging, high-mileage use cases, and duty cycles where fuel and maintenance savings can be measured.
What Fleets Should Watch
The useful part of the report is not that every fleet should move faster. It is that successful EV programs are increasingly built around evidence from the fleet's own operation: mileage, dwell time, charger utilization, maintenance history, and the real replacement cost of the combustion vehicle being displaced.
That gives fleet teams a cleaner way to defend both decisions: where EVs should move into the plan now, and where the business case still needs more infrastructure, better vehicle fit, or more stable economics.
