Missouri's 75 MPH Interstates Raise a Fleet Safety Check
Missouri will lift speed limits to 75 mph on selected stretches of four interstates by year-end, requiring fleet teams to reassess following distance, lane-change coaching and work-zone guidance.

Four Missouri corridors will move to 75 mph
Missouri plans to raise posted limits to 75 mph on designated stretches of I-29, I-35, I-49 and I-55 by the end of the year. The state announced the changes Oct. 21 after a review of eligible interstate segments; rural interstate and freeway limits in Missouri are generally 70 mph today.
The change is not symbolic. The selected roads carry significant truck traffic, including sections of I-29 and I-35 north of Kansas City, two stretches of I-49 toward Arkansas and several I-55 segments south of St. Louis. New signs will mark the higher limits as each section changes.
Higher surrounding speeds change the driving environment
Missouri Department of Transportation Director Ed Hassinger told Transport Topics that drivers should expect faster traffic and leave larger gaps when changing lanes. MoDOT's warning is especially useful for fleet coaching: an added 5 mph can require 90 feet or more of additional stopping distance.
That matters even when a fleet vehicle is governed below the new limit. Drivers still have to merge, pass, enter work zones and manage closing speeds around passenger vehicles moving faster than they are used to.
Put affected routes into the next safety review
Fleets that regularly use these corridors can update route briefings before signs change, reinforce space-management expectations and check whether speed-governor, camera and coaching thresholds reflect the new traffic mix. MoDOT says it will monitor safety outcomes and adjust if needed, making the rollout worth following after implementation.
