NCDOT Adds Dash-Cam Views to Traffic Operations
North Carolina DOT is using connected commercial-vehicle dash-cam imagery to verify road conditions beyond its fixed traffic-camera network.
Statewide Road-Level Imagery
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is adding dash-cam imagery from vehicles traveling across the state to help traffic managers verify road conditions in places not covered by fixed cameras.
NCDOT has deployed Iteris ClearGuide Dash Cam Imagery, which incorporates imagery from Vizzion's Drives service into the agency's traffic analytics platform. Government Fleet reported that NCDOT is the first U.S. state agency to deploy the capability statewide.
Filling the Camera Gaps
The system supplements probe speed data and real-time arrow-board locations with current and historical roadway imagery. Instead of sending staff to confirm every condition report, traffic managers can view dash-cam coverage on a map and select imagery from specific locations.
The imagery comes from a network of connected dash cameras installed on commercial vehicles. Vizzion reports that its network captures roadway imagery from vehicles traveling about 3 million miles per day.
Work Zones, Weather, and Incidents
NCDOT has already used or tested the imagery during a wildfire, fog events, and work zones. In each case, the point is practical: verify what is happening on the roadway before inaccurate lane, weather, or incident information reaches travelers.
For public fleets and transportation agencies, the deployment shows how vehicle-generated data can extend visibility without building a fixed-camera network everywhere. It also raises the bar for how agencies combine fleet movement, field imagery, traffic operations, and traveler information during fast-changing conditions.
