Wales Puts Public-Fleet EV Savings at GBP 1.4M to GBP 1.9M

Wales' public-sector electric fleet is avoiding the purchase of an estimated 2.4 million liters of diesel a year, according to an analysis released by the Welsh Government Energy Service.
The fleet includes 2,045 electric cars, light commercial vehicles, minibuses, refuse trucks, heavy commercial vehicles, buses and specialist equipment. The government values the avoided diesel at as much as GBP 3.7 million annually.
Charging costs still leave a seven-figure gap
After accounting for electricity, the analysis puts annual operating-cost savings between GBP 1.4 million and GBP 1.9 million, depending on each public body's charging tariff. That range matters because it separates gross fuel displacement from the number fleet budgets can actually use.
The analysis also modeled a 100-day oil-price shock. Under a disruption similar to recent U.S.-Iran market impacts, the electric fleet would avoid another GBP 200,000 to GBP 280,000 in diesel expense.
A mixed fleet, not a passenger-car pilot
The vehicle count spans duty cycles from cars and vans to refuse collection and specialist plant. That breadth makes the findings more useful than a narrow passenger-EV comparison, though the release does not break out mileage, acquisition cost or savings by vehicle class.
For fleet operators, the practical lesson is to keep the accounting honest: track displaced fuel, electricity tariffs and charging losses separately, then evaluate each duty cycle on its own. Shared charging, on-site generation and battery storage can improve the result, but the tariff paid at the depot remains a major input.
